Competitors win medals at Oklahoma School for Blind’s regional Braille Challenge®

MUSKOGEE, Okla. –– Thirty-three Oklahoma students competed at Oklahoma School for the Blind  for medals and prizes in the regional Braille Challenge® competition sponsored by Braille Institute of America in the United States and Canada.

The basic braille unit is an arrangement of six raised dots, two across and three down, that resembles the number six domino. Each dot or combination of dots represents letters of the print alphabet. Braille dots are designed to be read with the fingertips, but can be written by hand, on computers or portable electronic note takers.


School for the Deaf Foundation’s Golf Tournament April 29

SULPHUR, Okla. – Four-person teams and hole sponsors are encouraged to sign up now for the Oklahoma for the Deaf Foundation’s Fifth Annual Benefit Golf Tournament on Monday, April 29.   

The tournament will be held at Dornick Hills Golf and Country Club at 519 Country Club Road in Ardmore.


Masonic Charity Foundation grant helps School for the Deaf’s Senior Citizens’ Hearing Aid Program

EDMOND, Okla. – The Masonic Charity Foundation of Oklahoma awarded a generous grant to purchase hearing aids for 180 seniors through the statewide Senior Citizens Hearing Aid Program operated by the Oklahoma School for the Deaf.

Including the recent grant, the Masonic Charity Foundation has donated a total of  $893,000 which cleared waiting lists and helped lower-income seniors get hearing aids through the OSD program.


Sulphur bank president elected Rehabilitation Services’ Commission chair

Oklahoma City – Bank president and former Oklahoma state representative Wes Hilliard was recently elected to his second term as chair of the Commission for Rehabilitation Services.

Commissioner Hilliard has served as acting chair since April 2023.

Business Summit to focus benefits of hiring qualified workers with disabilities

Oklahoma City – “Disability at Work: Thrive Forum 2024" is the theme for a Business Summit from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 28 at Oklahoma History Center, 800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive in Oklahoma City.

The event will be hosted by Oklahoma Inclusive Postsecondary Education Alliance, Oklahoma Rehabilitation Services' Business Services Program and the Autism Foundation of Oklahoma.

School for the Deaf students receive 1,300 postcards from around the world

SULPHUR –  Oklahoma School for the Deaf elementary students have received 1,300 postcards from as far as away as Jordan and New Zealand through a new postcard exchange project at their school.

The theme is Hearts Around the World.

Award winners earn People with Disabilities Awareness Day honors

OKLAHOMA CITY – Outstanding award winners were recognized last Tuesday by the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services as part of DRS’ 30th People with Disabilities Awareness Day. More than 630 participants visited legislators at the State Capitol and attended a resource fair with 70 exhibitors followed by the award ceremony at the Oklahoma History Center.
