More than 700 people worked the halls and offices of the State Capitol today for Disability Awareness Day. Ms. Wheelchair Oklahoma, Elizabeth Reeve, was among the group to let lawmakers know that she has trouble getting her service dog into some businesses in Tahlequah. She says many business owners and lawmakers didn’t know that under the Americans with Disabilities Act, service dogs can go just about anywhere. Elizabeth Reeve: I found out that a lot of them didn’t have the information they needed, so I was able to educate every single one of my government officials and today here at the Capitol I’m going towards my legislators and informing them about the service dog as well. The Department of Rehabilitation Services says one in six Oklahomans has a disability. Using matching state and federal dollars, the Department helps the disabled find jobs and ways to adapt work environments to their needs. For each state dollar the Department gets, it receives four dollars in matching federal funds to provide those services.
